MotoLu Weekend Review – Estrella Galicia 0,0 Grand Prix of Spain

What a weekend!! Amazing crowds, brilliant racing, and fantastic results – Fabio Quartararo back on the podium after 560 days, and Alex Marquez taking a very deserved first MotoGP Sunday race victory. Let’s get into the review!

As always, here’s a reminder of the categories – Rider of the Weekend (not necessarily the rider who left the weekend with the most points, but somebody who really impressed)Most Improved (either throughout the course of the weekend, from one weekend to another, or perhaps over a longer period of time)Best Overtake (this one feels obvious)Head-in-Hands Moment (a moment from either the Sprint or the Sunday race that left me shouting “NO!” at the screen), and Best in Show (the overall best rider from the weekend).

Rider of the Weekend: I genuinely cannot pick between Alex Marquez and Fabio Quartararo, so I’m choosing both. Despite Fabio’s crash during the Sprint, he’s been incredible at Jerez this weekend. For Alex, he’s maintained the consistency he’s had across the season so far, and done one better this weekend with the race win.

Most Improved: There isn’t a world in which I don’t say Fabio Quartararo – yes the Sprint definitely didn’t go how he wanted, but to qualify on Pole, on the Yamaha arguably gives him this accolade by itself. Adding the Sunday race podium really is the icing on the cake for Quartararo.

Best Overtake: The first lap tussle between Pecco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez. I’ve been waiting and hoping for a proper Sunday race battle between the two of them and whilst it was rather short-lived, it was very satisfying… I’m ready for more!

Head-in-Hands Moment: Fermín Aldeguer is showing some great potential this season, and I’m sad to see him taking this spot again – what was a promising race for Aldeguer, where he was running in 4th, was ended by a crash on Lap 6. I’m hoping this is a classic case of “over-zealous Rookie taking the all-or-nothing approach”, but he needs to start bringing the bike (and some points) home to the Gresini garage more consistently.

Best in Show: Alex Marquez, without a doubt. It’s been a long time coming for Alex, but he’s finally achieved first MotoGP Sunday race win, and whilst Marc’s crash will have somewhat helped his cause, he fully deserved the victory. With this weekend’s results, Alex Marquez is now back at the top of the Championship standings. Let’s see what happens next time out at Le Mans…
