Oh were we treated this weekend at Mugello! Great crowds, close qualifying, fantastic racing, so many special liveries, and ending with Marc Marquez securing his 93rd win across all classes… it was a special weekend, for sure. So of course, as always, it’s time for the weekend review!
As always, here’s a reminder of the categories – Rider of the Weekend (not necessarily the rider who left the weekend with the most points, but somebody who really impressed), Most Improved (either throughout the course of the weekend, from one weekend to another, or perhaps over a longer period of time), Best Overtake (this one feels obvious), Head-in-Hands Moment (a moment from either the Sprint or the Sunday race that left me shouting “NO!” at the screen), and Best in Show (the overall best rider from the weekend).
Rider of the Weekend: I’ve been known to change the title of this accolade to “Riders” if I can’t pick just one rider, and I’m afraid I’m doing that again now – Marc Marquez, Pecco Bagnaia, and Alex Marquez all share this spot for this weekend, for providing some incredibly aggressive and entertaining overtaking during Sunday’s race.
Most Improved: After another weekend of featuring in Q2, and two more Top 10 finishes (and in higher placements than last time out at Aragon), Raul Fernandez is again my most improved. I said in my last review that I hoped his improvements were a sign of good things to come, and so far that seems to be the case.
Best Overtake: I’ve tried picking just one overtake from the amazing battle between Pecco Bagnaia, Marc Marquez, and Alex Marquez over the first few laps of Sunday’s race, but to me, the whole battle is deserving of this accolade.
Head-in-Hands Moment: Maverick Viñales had great pace during Sunday’s race, and could have potentially caught up to the leading 3 riders. So Morbidelli’s lunge on Viñales, ending Maverick’s race, was a difficult watch.
Best in Show: Winning both the Sprint and Sunday’s Grand Prix, and securing that special 93rd victory across all classes, it’s probably no surprise that this weekend’s Best in Show is Marc Marquez.
